THE GUIDE
Things to Do in Takayama
What fills a day in Takayama, what to book, and what costs nothing.
Takayama is a small city in the mountains of Gifu, and most of what people come for is within a walk of the station: the Edo-period merchant streets of Sanmachi Suji, two morning markets, old breweries with a cedar ball over the door, and the local beef. Shirakawa-go, the thatched village on this site’s homepage, is the classic day trip from here.
Walk the old town
The old town’s three streets of dark wooden merchant houses are free to walk, and quietest early in the morning. Happy Plus’s Edo-period merchant town walk adds a local guide for $37 (4.7 from 53 reviews). Takayama Jinya, the former government office of the shogunate, charges a small entry fee; the guided day featured above includes it.
The morning markets
Two markets run every morning until about noon, free to browse: the Miyagawa market along the river, and the smaller Jinya-mae market in front of Takayama Jinya. Local produce, pickles and crafts, mostly.
Sake breweries
Takayama’s cold winters and mountain water made it a brewing town, and several old breweries on the main streets pour tastings. Happy Plus’s tasting at a historic brewery covers at least five sakes for $50 (4.8 from 97 reviews), and Sakamoto Honyaku Koubou’s tour of six breweries does the full round for $83 (5.0 from 17 reviews).
Hida beef
Hida beef comes from black-haired cattle raised in Gifu Prefecture, and you will see it as skewers, sushi and buns in the old town. For a sit-down version, Tabino Shiori’s evening walk ends with Hida beef shabu-shabu and six sakes, from $128 (5.0 from 9 reviews), and the local food tasting walk is from $119 (5.0 from 14 reviews).
Hida Folk Village
An open-air museum of farmhouses moved from around the region, on a hill west of the centre, with thatched gassho-zukuri houses like Shirakawa-go’s. DeepExperience’s guided visit includes admission and the bus from Takayama Station, from $103 (4.6 from 10 reviews).
The festivals
The Takayama Festival runs twice a year on fixed dates: the spring festival at Hie Shrine on 14 and 15 April, and the autumn festival at Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine on 9 and 10 October, per the Takayama tourism office. Twelve floats come out in spring and eleven in autumn.
Day trips: Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi
- Shirakawa-go with Takayama: the featured Machinovate guided day walks Takayama with Jinya entry, then Shirakawa-go, transport both ways, from $156 (4.8 from 140 reviews).
- Shirakawa-go and Gokayama by bus: the H.I.S. day on the Nohi bus adds Gokayama and the Tenshukaku observatory for $85 (4.7 from 60 reviews). It is a shared bus with a Japanese-speaking assistant, not an English guide, and cancels free up to two days before.
- Shirakawa-go in half a day: Happy Plus’s half-day tour meets at the Shirakawa-go bus terminal with an English-speaking guide and a gassho house entry, from $108 (4.6 from 60 reviews).
- Kamikochi: Machinovate’s Shinhotaka Ropeway and Kamikochi day from $209 (4.8 from 101 reviews). Kamikochi only opens from mid-April to mid-November; in 2026 the season runs 17 April to 15 November.
All prices checked October 2026.
One day or two
One day covers the old town, a market, a brewery and Hida beef. Two days lets you add Shirakawa-go or the Folk Village without rushing. For the village itself, the Shirakawa-go tours on the homepage leave from Kanazawa.
